Springboks scrum-half Faf de Klerk has extended his contact with Sale Sharks until 2023, the Premiership side announced Monday.

De Klerk, who was named on a five-man shortlist for World Rugby’s player of the year for 2018, made 25 appearances for Sale in his debut season following his move from Super Rugby’s Lions in 2017.

The 27-year-old featured in all six of South Africa’s Rugby Championship fixtures against New Zealand, Australia and Argentina this year, limiting him to just five Premiership appearances so far this campaign. De Clerk scored his first try of the season in Sale’s 30-15 win at Gloucester Saturday.

“It’s humbling to know a club wants to extend your contract, even though you still have more than a year left on your current one,” De Klerk said.

“I would not have re-signed if I did not enjoy it here and really do believe in what we are trying to achieve here at Sale.”

The scrum-half is set to add to his 21 Springboks caps in 2019, and is expected to play a significant role in South Africa’s Rugby World Cup journey in Japan.

“I am delighted that Faf has agreed to extend his contract with us,” Sale director of rugby Steve Diamond said.

“Sale Sharks have had some fantastic players throughout the professional era, there are too many to mention, but Faf is one of a few truly world class players who have been at the club.

“His ability, attitude and enthusiasm are second to none and are a testament to the professional he is.”
