Dani Alves agrees to PSG contract extension – sources

Angel Di María looked unstoppable against Marseille, scoring twice and providing the opening goal assist in a strong win at Le Parc des Princes.

Dani Alves has agreed to extend his stay at Paris Saint-Germain for at least one more season, sources close to the player have confirmed to ESPN FC.

After months of negotiations, notably in February when the Brazil international’s agent Dinorah Santa Ana was in Paris for initially unsuccessful talks, Alves and PSG have reached an agreement which should be announced soon.

Alves, 35, had hoped to secure a two-year deal, but PSG were not keen to commit to a contract of that length and sought another option.

In the end, the former Barcelona and Juventus man will sign a one-year deal with an optional second year included in the terms.

Alves is currently out of action with a left knee injury that has forced him out of the latest Brazil squad, but he will be back before the end of the season.

Sources have told ESPN FC that the right-back still hopes to compete at the World Cup in Qatar come 2022, so remaining at the top level with PSG is absolutely “fundamental.”

Sources say this month’s Champions League exit to Manchester United hit Alves hard, as well as his teammates, but their thoughts have already turned to putting things right in Europe next campaign and the source added that the players feel that they owe the club’s owners and supporters.

Alves’ contract extension could be confirmed on Monday or Tuesday next week. All that is left is for the paperwork to be drawn up and signed.

ESPN FC PSG correspondent Jonathan Johnson and Barcelona corespondent Moises Llorens contributed to this report.
